The Town of Chilmark and Chilmark School share this small, non-regulation sized field. While the elementary school and preschool only serve about 80 children, this is a thriving central hub that connects the school to the town's library, Community Center, Post Office, two playgrounds, and tennis courts. The field is also home to the beloved Chilmark Community Center summer camp. It is where children, families, and summer visitors flock to do everything from play baseball, soccer or a game of tag to hosting community happenings such as the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival events, the Annual Fireman's Barbecue, and the Martha's Vineyard Book Fair. So, although not "high use" in terms of official games and practices, this field supports a steady flow of traffic year round.
.6 acres, not irrigated
An interesting case study because it is not irrigated and cannot be fertilized.
We support this field's use with decompaction, slice seeding, and supplemental mowing.
New Goals!
The Field Fund recently donated new, moveable goals to replace old fixed wooden ones. These goals are moved on a regular basis to prevent any particular areas from becoming compacted and worn out.
